Dog Diarrhea

Diarrhea can, and chances are will come to every dog you ever have in your lifetime and is a very common type of illness to have but in most cases is nothing serious and is not a cause to worry.

Lots of things can cause diarrhea in your dog and although on most cases the vet need not be contacted if it persists or becomes uncontrollable by your dog then it may need a better examination and diagnosis to prescribe the correct medicine.

Diarrhea is more common in puppies due to their immune system not being as strong as a dog’s immune system yet but diarrhea in dogs is also very common. Situations which cause diarrhea can be anything from a change in surroundings, worms, or conccidia, to a virus or pest your dog has caught.

A change in diet or food may have triggered the illness and it should be looked into to stop it happening again, dogs are very vulnerable to changes and it can affect them in many ways. Being over excited or having stressful days along with other emotional changes may bring this problem.

It is always important to look after your dog well while they are suffering this illness, puppies and dogs will get dehydrated in these times and you need to make sure they have enough fluids to stop further illness.

While your dog has diarrhea they become weaker due to low body weight and not getting sufficient vitamins so their immune systems lower making it easier to catch other viruses and illnesses.

Keep a close eye on your dog when they have diarrhea and if you have fears of it being anything but a common diarrhea cause then seek a vet or professional for advice. There are plenty of advice leaflets and informational sheets around in pet shops and dog care specialist places, as long as you are aware of your dog’s problem and are aware of these facts you should be in good shape.

Ewww! Throw it out, it's ruined!

  • Dixie Deb says:

Use plain pureed pumpkin to stop it, and then plain organic yogurt to re-populate the gut. Be sure to keep him hydrated. You don't say how big your dog is, but a couple good mouth fulls is good – a teaspoon for a chi – a cup or more for a giant. Don't worry. You can't poison them or anything if you give too much, but too little won't work.

    Good luck.

ADD: Your dog will poop orange. It is not dying. :-)

It is very indigestable for dogs ( and humans) and as 'she found it on the ground' I would be concerned if this continued I would have her checked with a vet as anything could be in it……make sure she drinks plenty and starve her for 24 hours, if after that she is still doing it go and see a vet or before if there is any change in her behaviour

Withhold all food for 24 hours..you can give the dog Imodium, but be careful how much, 1 tablet for large dog , half for medium size, one quarter for small dogs, be prepared for some really wicked gas.
I use Holistic Solution by Eagle Pack for dogs with stomach upset or diarhea. one quarter teaspoon mixed with cottage cheese or plain yoghurt It works really well, restores the natural balance in the gut.
You can get it in a lot of pet stores. I always have some in the house, just in case.
After 24 hours you can give them boiled rice mixed with a little chicken broth or my dogs love rice mixed with cottage cheeseand in no time their diarhea is cleared up!

I assume you have had your dog checked for internal parasites? If not, this is the place to start. Also, avoid any dog foods with liver as this will also add to the problem. No cows milk. Any cooked bones a dog can chew up, they should not have. Raw bones with fat, they should not have. Good luck

It can, puppy food is very rich and high in protein and can give adult dogs diarrhea.

Don't feed your dog for the next twenty four hours, however make sure that water is available. If the diarrhoea persists take her to the vets tomorrow and ask for a sachet of electrolytes. This will ensure that she will not become dehydrated and she will not need to go on a drip.
If the diarrhoea subsides, give her small light meals four times a day. Cook scrambled eggs with water (no milk), boiled fish or skinned cooked chicken in soggy rice.

  • whats wrong with the buzzes in her words

  • Come? You’re meeting him halfway. He’s not coming to you if you go to him in the slightest way.

  • Go to the local big chain grocer and rent a Rug Doctor with the attachments and Rug Doctor carpet shampoo for pets or one of the other version (deep clean, oxy clean, etc)

The machine and attachments rent for $26 to $30 per day. And the shampoo sells for around $20. So you be out about $45 to $50 dollars, but it totally works and the house smells nice and clean.

It takes me about 4 hours to do a 1700 sq ft house, so I'll use the rest of the time cleaning the carpets in my car, cleaning the couch, helping a relative.

Honestly, I don't think you can get a carpet cleaning company to do one room, let alone the whole house (if you so choose) for $50.

    Good luck.
