Dog training is not rocket science and is not as difficult as you think. It is certainly possible for ANY dog owners to train their dogs themselves provided they put in adequate amount of effort. The principles listed here are universal to dog training of any dog breeds, be it sporting, working, toy or terrier, any dogs – big or small, pup or old, any Owners – competitive or leisure.

In short, if you are serious about training your dog and demand Only success, You MUST apply these principles. No “If” No “But”. Get the basic right first before you start to train your dog!

Consistency

Consistency is very important during training and correcting unwanted behavior. Always use the same “command” for a specific task you require of your dog. Don’t confuse him by using different command for the same task.

Once you’ve establish some house rules such as – keeping the cooking area out of bound to your dog, enforce them constantly. If the dog learns that he can get away with it now and then, your previous efforts will go down the drain. Lastly, make sure everyone in the family accept and enforce your rules consistently.

Timing

Timing is critical to successful training. Praise your dog whenever he is doing something right. As expected, reprimand him on the spot and to the point whenever he misbehave or fails to response to your command. Praise and reprimand that happen later will have no effect on your dog.

* There are 2 main schools of thoughts concerning the timing of correction when your dog misbehaves. I called the first school of thoughts the “Direct Approach”. It simply requires you to reprimand your dog on the spot if he misbehaves. This is more of a tangible and straight forward approach to training your dog and is easy to understand for most trainers.

I called the second school of thoughts the “Endurance Approach” as it’ll require you to ignore your dog when he misbehaves. Using the cause and effect to your advantage, this approach requires you to ignore the dog, especially when he misbehaves to seek attention and encourage you to pay attention to your dog only when he’s a good boy.

Attention Factor (Endurance Approach)

Dogs love attention and are hugely motivated by it. Unlike man, dogs do not know how to differentiate between positive and negative attention. They see things in a simple way. If a certain action gets reaction and attention, you’ll bet they repeat it over and over again. (Cause and Effect)

Unfortunately, for most dog owners, we more often than not give our dogs negative attention. For example, “Do you let him out of his crate when he groans?” or “Do you give chase when he runs off with your socks?” These are negative attentions given to the dog and is certainly motivating his bad behavior.

Fortunately, the opposite is true if you pay enough attention to your dog when he behaves himself. When the dog understands that he’ll get attention only when he’s behaving, he’ll learn that only good behavior attract attention and he’ll repeat his good behavior always.

Focus your attention on your dog only when he is behaving; praise him or give him a treat, let him know that he’s getting the attention. If this technique is used correctly, he’ll be a well-behaved dog for a long time to come. Nevertheless, this approach is probably not for the short temper and requires you to go through an endurance ordeal. Imagine your dog chewing up your sock in your presence. “Endure Dude!”

Training Mood

You need to be in the correct frame of mind before you train your dog. Never train your dog when you are under the influence of alcohol or drug. Also try not to train him if you’ve a bad day or not in the best of your mood.

If you’ve just argued with your sweetie or got a telling off from your boss earlier on. You would most probably take out your frustration on him and threaten your relationship with him in future.

Do remember to apply these dog training principles constantly & you’ll be half-way through to successful dog training.

I happened to come upon the show “The Dog Whisperer” yesterday. The show stars Cesar Millan, a well known dog trainer who is known as the Dog Whisperer. This particular segment was about a woman who owned two dogs. The second dog was a pit bull/labrador mix she took in. Everything was going great until a new man entered the women’s life and they got engaged. The dog didn’t like the fiancé and the dog was winning. Enter Cesar.

Cesar saw that the dog was dominating the relationship. The woman was very emotional about the dog. She felt sorry for the dog because of what it had been through. She didn’t want the dog to suffer any more. So she “protected” the dog. The dog became the alpha in the relationship and her fiancé was a threat.

Cesar pointed out to the women that dog didn’t care that she felt sorry for him and didn’t care about what happened in the past. He was just living in the moment and letting sleeping dogs lie. But the women’s beliefs about the dog and the way she treated him were affecting the dog’s behavior. As a result, the dog behavior was “limited” by how the woman treated him.

The women had to get over her emotions and change her thinking about the dog in order to take control of the relationship. Once she changed her mind set and her behavior, the dog behaved appropriately and accepted the fiancé as a co-alpha leader.

So what lessons do internet marketers learn from this story? The lesson is that to become a successful internet marketer you have to begin with the right mindset and the right behaviors (and be an alpha leader as Mike Dillard, author of Magnetic Sponsoring, says).

Just like the women had to change her thinking and behavior regarding the dog, you have to get rid of your “stink’in think’in” as Zig Ziglar would say. And you have to put aside limiting beliefs and behaviors, i.e., bad habits. Whatever happened in the past is dead. Learn from it and move on.

The internet marketing world can be a dog eat dog world. And true, “some days you’re the dog; some days you’re the hydrant.” But take a clue from the dogs. Remember that people only care about the solution to their problem. They’ll respond when you show them you have the answer they need and want. Thanks Cesar.

Happy Business Building,

All dog owners I know say they love their dog. “Nothing is more normal,” you ask. But we lack the time and often life passes quickly. If we really asked the question about our dogs, we would realize we do not like the way it always should. Yes. It happens that we love evil. So here is something a little more love your cute puppy love.

Six ways to love your dog

1. Do the work
Nowadays, dogs are not working and they have an easy life. Few of them are herders, dogs of customs or police dogs. The majority of our doggies are unemployed and bored. Yet the boredom in dogs often creates a host of behavioral problems. So how to increase the work of a dog house? Training sessions, courses in dog training, agility courses, etc.. Everything for him to learn tips and make him work mentally and physically.

2. Make the force a little
Dogs need to expend energy through play and exercise. However, be aware that many behavioral problems could easily be prevented if the dogs were doing enough exercise daily. A walk of ten minutes a day is far from sufficient for a normal dog. So what? Increase your walking time, go walk more than once a day, go to the dog park for Fido could be spending with other dogs like him, go take a course in canine agility, etc..

3. Educate as it should from the outset
Do not let your dog is a young adult with lots of bad habits you decide to educate. One of the greatest gifts you can do for you and your dog is to go take a course in dog training, kindergarten level, since its purchase. Know your dog well educated and make an early age will work to strengthen your relationship with the animal and avoid many problems of future behavior. It is the foundation of success to be happy with his dog. But beware. Choose well your dog educator: he will work with you, gently, with positive reinforcement and he does not use physical force or punishment.

4. Cut the treats
Give regularly treats his dog is unfortunately not so much love. Too many dogs are too many treats every day and gradually fatten. However, overweight and obesity are bad for the health of dogs. This can lead to health problems like diabetes and heart disease for example, or even worsen existing problems such as joint pain. We also know that a thin dog will live at least two years longer than overweight dogs. That’s a lot two years in the life of a dog. Let us make some comparisons to see offer a biscuit chocolate chip or an ounce of cheddar cheese to a dog of 10 kilos (20 pounds), it is as if I ate a snack or a burger and half a tablet of chocolate respectively. It’s too much.

5. Maintain regularly taking the time to:
• Brush their coat and check for the presence of masses, lumps or lesions on his body.
• Trim her claws regularly so as not to unnecessarily prolong leave and deprive good traction on the floor.
• Check the cleanliness of its ears regularly and clean them if necessary.
• Brush teeth as often as possible with or without fluoride toothpaste to offer food specially designed cons dental calculus.

6. Have his health to heart
Your dog is entitled to his annual visit to her veterinarian. A good physical examination is necessary to ensure that any clout in the oil, physical side. Adequate vaccines protect against some of the serious or fatal viruses, such as rabies, for example. The appropriate drugs rid of parasites such as worms from the heart and intestinal worms.

Discovering that your older, mature dog is housesoiling in your home can be frustrating for many dog owners. After eliminating any medical causes, you must take a look at other reasons for this behavior.

If your dog has become anxious, this can cause housesoiling in a mature dog. Let’s look at how this can come about.

Once your dog is six months or older you both begin to develop a certain confidence with each other regarding housetraining. Or, at least you think so. As your puppy passes the age of 6 months and is feeling confident in his sense of place, you are confident that you’ve done a great job of housetraining him as a young puppy. In fact, you’re so confident, that he’s graduated from sleeping in the crate to sleeping with you in bed.

While things may look great on the surface in your relationship with your now adult dog, circumstances change in our lives every day that can have profound effects on your dog.

Here’s a good example:

Let’s say you get a new job requiring a move across town or to a new city. You’ve made the transition and things are looking great.

You may be putting in more hours to settle in to the new job. However, changes like this can be unsettling to your dog.

His old home has been taken away.

He is now in a new environment where everything is unfamiliar.

Your schedule has changed, you are working later.

You leave food and water down for him as you have been getting home past dinner time.

Did I mention the dog food was the grocery store variety? Filled with cheap carbohydrate fillers?

His expectation of your arrival time is no longer valid.

There’s even a chance that he is walked much less because you get in too late to walk him.

And this is where it starts. You come home to a mess on the floor in your new home.

Marking in the house can be a sign of insecurity in dogs who are old enough to be housetrained. This starts to become very frustrating for you while at the same time, the anxiety builds in your dog.

Your preference is to leave your 5 year old dog loose in your home to lounge at his leisure but instead, you limit his daily activities to the bathroom.

His stress builds as he continues to soil in the bathroom.

So how can you turn this around? Let’s take a look.

Put him on a learn to earn program adding lots of structure to his life.

Require him to earn everything by performing a sit, a down and come, for the things he wants in life which are food, space, access to you and walks outside.

Consider a gradual move to a once a day feeding at night by reducing his morning meal by 25% each day and adding it to his evening meal. In four days he will be eating once daily at night. Later on you can begin to feed a snack in the morning.

Feed him a high protein low carbohydrate diet. Cheap carbohydrates cause excess serotonin in the brain which can cause anxiety.

Commit to taking him on structured walks twice daily.

Play down your departures and arrivals. Ignore him for 5 minutes when you leave or come home.

Work on good owner leadership skills by requiring him to work for everything Institute three, 2 minute training sessions each day doing sit, down and come, to give your dog a sense of working for leadership rather than feeling responsible for it himself.

Usually by the end of the first week you can start to see fewer accidents in the home and by weeks three and four, your dog should have no issues with housesoiling at all.

Anyone witnessing their dog’s anxieties in the form of housesoiling should take a look at making some positive changes to your relationship with your dog.

It does take work but a revitalized relationship with your dog is worth every penny.

Getting your dog to understand what you want him do when given certain commands is the purpose behind dog obedience training. It is a communication process between owner and dog that creates a bond that is vital to the safety of the dog, his owner, and those around him.

Dogs are naturally social creatures that in the wild live in packs. When brought into a home a dog becomes a part of the family pack, and just like in the wild there is a natural order to things with a leader of the pack, or alpha dog, on down. One of the primary purposes of dog obedience training is to show your dog who is in charge. Without proper training or discipline just about any dog will naturally try to take over and be in charge.

This is where obedience training comes in. It lets your dog know who’s in charge and at the same time creates a bond between him and his humans. It is one of the most important things any dog owner can do to establish a strong relationship between owner and dog.

Training your dog subtly but efficiently establishes to your dog that you are the leader of the pack and they are not, but it should not involve any negative or punishment-based components. Training your dog to be obedient can be an extraordinary learning experience as well as being a fun and rewarding activity for you and your dog.

Obedience training is great for your dog because it is a good mental exercise that enables your dog to live happier and with more freedom. It is a way of fostering communication between owner and dog. Although obedience training doesn’t solve all behavior problems it is the foundation for solving just about any problem including house training, chewing up your belongings, excessive barking, digging holes in your yard, fighting other dogs and aggressive behavior. The goal behind dog obedience training is the idea that a dog will respond with a certain reaction every time a certain command is given.

Almost every dog owner will have to use some sort of behavior modification techniques at one time or another when training their prized pet. It helps avoid temperament and behavior problems. Many dogs develop behavior problems because their owners fail to set rules and enforce them. Proper training allows you to communicate with your dog, helps to foster the bond between you, and keeps him safe from both injuries and behavior problems.

Dog obedience training is about setting boundaries that must be enforced on a daily basis and is the most important thing a dog should learn as it is the foundation to solving many of any dog’s behavior problems. Obedience training is the perfect method for both you and your dog to establish a connection, to relate to one another and to make living together more enjoyable.

One of the first dog obedience commands you will teach is training your dog to sit and stay.

This is an important command for you and your dog to master. It will clearly define you as the dominant one in the owner-dog relationship, and will provide a solid foundation for more advanced training later on.

You can start training your dog to sit and stay at around three months of age. Some general things to keep in mind when you first start out:

- Keep the training sessions short, ten minutes is fine initially.

- Make the training fun, don’t make it feel like a chore, to you and your dog.

- Sessions should be full of praise and positive reinforcement (more about this later).

- Be repetitive, practice over and over until it clicks with your dog.

Training Your Dog To Sit

The first step in the process is getting your dog to sit on command. There are three training techniques I use with my dogs, depending on their age and temperament.

1. For young puppies I like this method. When you see your puppy about to sit, or in the act of sitting, just say “Sit” in a firm tone. When your puppy sits praise him. In your dogs eyes this technique builds an association with your verbal command “sit”, and the act of sitting. Most puppies make this connection very quickly.

2. For older puppies or dogs this method works every time. With your dog standing in front of you, grab a tasty treat and guide it over his nose, then continue up over his head. Hold the treat a couple of centimeters above your dog while performing this motion. It will cause your puppy to follow the treat up with his nose, and at the same time plant his behind on the ground. You should say the command “Sit” as your dog is getting into the sit position. Praise and reward your dog as soon as he sits. After a while you will only need the verbal command, not the treat.

3. You need a collar and leash for this next technique, which is best suited to bigger dog breeds. Stand next to your dog, both of you facing the same way. Hold the leash straight up tight, directly above your dogs collar. At the same time push down on your dogs back and say “sit”. As soon as your dog sits, reward and praise him. Within no time you can stop pushing him down, then stop holding the leash up tight. All your dog will require is your verbal “sit” command.

The “Stay” part of the Sit and Stay is our next step. Since we have already trained our dog to sit on command, I prefer to use a “release” or “away” command, instead of “stay”. This is bacause when I tell my dog to sit, I really mean sit and stay, until I tell you to do something else. The release command I use is “off you go”.

The process goes like this. Tell your dog to sit, he’ll stay in the sit position, then break or release this sit command by saying “off you go”. You should use your dog’s name then your release command to start with, which will cause your dog to come to you. When he gets to you praise and reward him. After a while you will only need to use your release command, your dog will understand that he is free to go. If your dog breaks the sit command before you issue the release command, say “no!” and put him back in the sit position and start again.

Over time you can increase the time and distance between getting your dog to sit and then releasing him from it. You may even want to add some distractions, or do your training in different locations. When your dog holds his sit position even when a cat cruises by, you know he is ready to move on to more advanced obedience training commands.

If you understand and apply these methods you should achieve the desired result. It may take a bit of patience and plenty of repetition, but you will get there.

It’s never too early to encourage language development in your child, and once again, Puppy Dog makes learning fun. Get ready to see your child engage all their senses while beginning to understand the relationship sounds, words, and images have to each other. Repetition: Puppy Dog introduces words by individual sounds, encouraging repetition and building vocabulary. Imagery and Sound: Colorful illustrations and simple line drawings are used to keep your child’s interest; putting meaning to words they see and sounds they hear. Relationships: Puppy Dog introduces similar items together, helping your child begin to understand the relationships items have to one another. Baby Phonics masters the task of sensory learning. Your child will learn with Puppy Dog as they hear, see, and talk about words together. Learning to talk has never made more sense.
Help answer the question about Dog Relationship
Last week I had sex with my dog but now our relationship has toltally changed How can I change it back to be4?
We used to be best friends and one drunken night seemed to ruin our whole relationship.
For many years, it was common for owners to resort to physical punishment in their efforts to train a dog. We’ve come a long way since then, but there are owners who still see it as a viable solution to overcome difficult unwanted dog behavior.

Part of the reason is that they lose patience and become frustrated. While physical punishment will get the results desired, it does absolutely nothing towards developing a good relationship between dog and owner.

When you train a dog, the aim is to develop an understanding between the two of you but is based on mutual respect and not on fear. What you rather have your dog do your bidding because he fears you? Or would you rather have him obey because he respects you and wants to please you?

Of course, physical punishment is just one part of the equation. Yelling at your dog can also trigger fear. Also, if you’re inconsistent in your approach you can leave your dog confused. For instance, if you speak in a calm voice whenever you are working with your dog, you’ll come to expect it every time. If you are calm one time and tense and stressed the next, he will not be what you expect from him because he sees conflicting messages from you.

Your dog will begin to lose trust in you and whether or not you are a good pack leader worthy of the role. Once this happens, he’ll become increasingly less responsive to your commands. He’ll begin to challenge you for the status of power that goes with being pack leader.

Punishment does more than inflict physical or mental pain. It affects the dog’s self-esteem and can cause a multitude of unwanted behaviors, among them fear aggression which is perhaps one of the worst. A dog that is fearful will become timid and apprehensive or he can become defensive and angry. In both cases, the dogs can become dangerous.

If you want to train a dog correctly, use the exact opposite of physical and mental or emotional punishment. Stay calm, repeat your commands, and if necessary gently show the dog what you want him to do. When he obeys, praise him so that he knows he is pleasing you. When we first got our kitty, or dog was a little bit unsure of what to do. They eventually became friends. Our dog passed away, and we got a new puppy a few weeks ago. Our cat was PISSED. She hisses at it, swats at it, and scratches anyone who tries to force a relationship between them.
Does anyone know what to do?
Any tips or thoughts on if they will ever become friends like our old dog and cat would be great, thanks !

Everyone who wants to have a harmonious happy relationship with a dog should learn to apply the power of positive dog training. What exactly do we mean by the power of positive dog training? The answer shouldn’t be too complex though we can elaborate a lot on it: basically the power of positive dog training means the ability to develop skills and obedience in your dog while avoiding physical punishment. It is not yet sure whether the power of positive dog training could solve all kinds of behavior problems, but we are convinced that a lot more loving methods can be used in teaching obedience to an animal.

The power of positive dog training has gained prominence in recent years as people have reached the conclusion that forceful methods can sometimes do more bad than good. From a certain point of view, the power of positive dog training only implies a shift of attitude, a different approach to our four-legged companions. We should definitely start by changing our way of seeing them: dogs are not animals that will dominate you unless you show control first. The main aspect of the power of positive dog training is to see your pet as a creature that needs love and a good environment.

Since positive influences are so appealing to humans, why should it be the case for dogs too? They’re very tender animals that attach to the family and the environment, therefore, the power of positive dog training should work wonders on them. If you don’t know where to start, the reward type of training is a good way. The power of positive dog training is obvious in the rewards the animal receives when it performs a certain task. Sometimes, the dog may be more thrilled about the owner’s attention than by a toy for instance. Try the power of positive dog training for yourself and see what it is like.

Most animal centres now recognize and widely use the power of positive dog training, and of course people find it more appealing to take their pet to a place where it will be well taken care of. There are even books and guides on the power of positive dog training, tackling with all the methods enjoyed by both handlers and animals. If you choose to test the power of positive dog training on your own, have a look from time to time to the many sites providing useful tips online.

Like humans and many of our pets, dogs are living longer than ever these days. Dogs that would have died young in the wild when they were no longer able to defend themselves or find food are now living to a great age. Over this period of time there are slow changes in both mental and physical health.

In this article, I am going to outline some of the major physiological changes that occur, some ways in which we as caregivers can help them, some of the illnesses that affect older age groups, and some therapies that may be helpful.

Physiological Changes in Ageing: The nervous system: Messages travel down the nerve fibres of a dog in its prime at 6,000m per second. In older dogs these slow down to 1,300m per second.

The lungs: The lung tissue loses its elasticity with age, reducing the efficiency of respiration.

The circulatory system: The blood vessels lose their elasticity, making small haemorrhages more common e.g. in the brain tissue.

The brain: The consequent lack of oxygen to the brain reduces memory and learning. It can also affect personality and irritability.

Signs of Ageing: By the age of 16, most dogs will have lost some of their brain function. They may show signs of disorientation, changes in social relationships, changes to their diurnal rhythm, and incontinence. By the age of 16, 20% of dogs pass urine or faeces in the house, 25% of dogs sleep less at night and more in the daytime, and 60% interact less with their human companions (although they may go through a phase of increased attachment). More than 70% are disorientated, getting stuck in corners, going to the wrong side of the door when asking to go out, barking for no reason, and gazing into space. Neutered males get less aggressive with age, but neutered females tend to get more so.

Hormonal control and Ageing: Elderly dogs tend to secrete more stress hormones, even when relaxed. Training them to be more relaxed can help give them more control in later life. There is also a general reduction in brain neuroendocrine chemicals, especially dopamine.

How we can help with Ageing Dogs: We can help slow down ageing by gentle mental and physical stimulation. Massage has several benefits – it can improve circulation, loosen up stiff joints and induce relaxation. Mental stimulation can increase the number of connections between neurons in the brain.

Feeding a diet high in antioxidants and vitamins can help. An older dog needs about 20% fewer calories, and some dogs gain weight with maturity. As always, any change in diet should be made gradually.

We as care-givers need to accept that our dog is ageing.

Over-exercising does more harm than good, so we need to allow the dog to set the pace. Older dogs can become confused by a change to the usual routines. As the skin glands produce less oil with age, more frequent grooming will help your older dog. Consider brushing its teeth daily, and provide more frequent toilet breaks.

Complementary Therapies and Ageing: Acupuncture can be particularly helpful with the pain of arthritis etc. Like acupressure and shiatsu, it also reduces pain by relaxing muscles.

T Touch therapy is a touch therapy that can be learned by the care-giver, and can be very calming in anxiety as well as helping many stress -related problems – which, as we now know, can give any symptom.

Musculoskeletal problems can also be helped by osteopathy and chiropractic, as well as massage as discussed above. All these touch therapies are beneficial mainly in animals that enjoy touch, and can increase stress in those that do not.

Nutritional therapies involve altering the diet slightly to benefit the dog. The role of diet in helping ageing has already been discussed. It is notable however that when a dog declines to eat, for example during an infection, it does so for good reason, (such as to starve the invading organism, and concentrate energy on the immune system rather than digestion,) and should not be forced. The commonest nutritional problem in dogs is overfeeding, causing obesity, and it is important for us to help our animals and help educate caregivers where this is problematic. However, beware that any strict, unbalanced diet given over a prolonged period of time may lead to malnutrition.

Herbal remedies can help with specific ill health. Examples include comfrey to help ease sprains, marigold for digestive disorders, garlic for respiratory infections and digestive upset, and echinacea for stimulating the immune system.

Aromatics are best self-selected, choosing those to offer based on any symptoms the dog may have. The nature of homeopathy and other vibrational medicines leads to them being more effective when targeted at the whole spectrum of symptoms and personality rather than at a single region of the body.

The beauty of spiritual healing and Reiki is that the dog will take whatever healing energy is needed, without a specific diagnosis being made. It is absorbed into whatever parts of the body, mind and spirit require it, stimulating its immune system and other natural means of self-healing. It can help with physical, emotional and psychological conditions. As the dog nears the end of its life, healing can help both the dog and its caregivers to come to terms with this, which helps with the process of passing over and with bereavement. Healing can be supplemented with use of crystals such as amber and carnelian.

Summary: In this article I have discussed the physiological causes for the signs of ageing that we see, the symptoms & signs experienced, and ways in which we can help, particularly touching on complementary therapies.
